Soon the Christmas party season will be upon us, and I am sure many of you have already started thinking about party outfits and dresses. One of the great choices is a black dress whether it is a little one or not. However, for me, and I am sure for you too, just wearing a black dress is not enough: it needs to be completed with accessories. One of my favourite dress accessories is a detachable collar. It seems that detachable collars are still trendy, and this is a great news. They are not just a nice addition to any dress including a black one, but they are also fun and easy to make.
A DIY detachable collar would also cost you very little comparing to a ready-to-wear one from a clothing store. Mine cost me about $5. For comparison, I would pay up to$35 for a similar one from a store. I think it sounds like a great deal 😉 And it took me only one evening to make it.
This is how I styled a black dress with my DIY detachable lace collar. This outfit is two years old, from that period of my life when I looked a bit strange 😉 Nowadays I would wear it differently. I think I would put on different tights… not white, maybe sheer black… but I would still keep the collar.
So, let’s dive into the collar DIY details!
- a blouse with a pretty collar – I got one from a thrift store
- sharp point scissors
- a needle
- a thread matching the blouse colour
- two buttons matching the blouse colour if the blouse has no buttons
Get your blouse prepared. I got one from a second hand store, and it cost me $5. As you can see, the blouse is pretty ugly, but it has a lace collar with a big potential!
Take the scissors, pierce through the fabric right next to the collar seam and carefully cut it off. Trim off frayed edges if necessary.
Now snip two buttons off the blouse if it has any.
Attach the buttons one by one to each end of the collar. One of the buttons will be used as a fastener, and the other one will decorate the detachable collar for symmetry.
Once the buttons are attached, make a button loop. This is the longest step in this DIY 😉
Make a loop of thread wide enough to go over button, then make a few strands and stitch over the strands.
The button loop is finished…
..and the collar is ready to wear! Wasn’t it fast 😉
That’s how the collar looks on the neck. And of course you can wear it with any other dress or sweater. A lace detachable collar makes everything look prettier 😉
